Frequently Asked Questions

We truly believe there is no comparison between feeding our dogs commercial grade pet food and feeding a raw diet. The dog’s ancestor is the wolf who has been surviving on whole prey animals, fish, eggs and vegetation in the wild for millennia and has thrived as nature intended.

Mother Nature has not set our animals up to fail, although the intervention by humans has contributed to the decline in our pet’s health over time. This is due to poor quality pet food choices.

Our number one goal as raw feeders is to support our dog’s health and wellbeing. We do this by feeding species appropriate meals which our dogs are biologically designed to eat. Your dog will finally be absorbing the nutrients needed to thrive due to the high protein rich diet.

Feeding raw will eliminate poor ingredients being fed to your dog including human food waste products, synthetic vitamins and minerals, preservatives, cheap filler and processed foods.

Feeding raw is a diet that nourishes and supports all aspects of your dog’s life. It is what nature intended – feeding whole, natural and nourishing foods.

Once you’ve started to feed raw you will understand the benefits and the transformation of your dog’s health will be rewarded.

Physical changes you will also see in your dog include:

  • Dental Benefits - fresh breath, white teeth with no tartar and dental disease
  • Skin & Coat - shiny, smooth, oil-free coats, flake-free and itch-free skin
  • Allergy Relief - chronic allergies and infections subside and/or disappear
  • Odour Relief - Odourless breath and body
  • Energy & Vitality - Happy, active minds and bodies
  • Stool - major changes in poop
  • Mental & Physical Exercise - mental stimulation from working at mealtimes

The carnivore has evolved eating species appropriate raw diets for millennia and their digestive system is well equipped to handle a certain amount of bacteria.

A dog’s saliva carries the enzyme lysozyme which is designed to destroy harmful bacteria before it hits the digestive tract. A dog’s digestive tract is also much shorter than a human’s, so if harmful bacteria passes through the lysozyme, it doesn’t have time to colonize in the body as it is hours not days before being expelled as waste.

The acidity levels in a dog’s stomach also serve as a strong defence against bacteria as they are also ten times stronger than human’s acidity levels. The hydrochloric stomach acid is another barrier that kills any harmful bacteria that might come its way.

To avoid bacterial contamination, proper food handling is key. Always wash your hands, disinfect your food preparation area & wash your dogs bowl after each meal.

Finally store, refrigerate and freeze meats following strict protocol and always buy your meats from a reputable supplier.

Raw ground meats, all types of poultry and a variety of meats will last in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

Be sure that your refrigerator is set at 40 Fahrenheit (4.444 degrees Celsius) or below. This will protect most foods and aid in slowing bacteria growth. Refrigerator settings higher than 40 Fahrenheit may promote a rapid growth of bacteria.

Yes, but only if you follow the rules!

Raw bones should NEVER be fed until day your dog has completed the 12 day transitioning process. Before this time, your dog’s stomach PH will not have properly adjusted. An acidic stomach is needed in order to break down bone content. Feeding bones before day 12 of the transition process puts your dog in danger as it can lead to bone obstruction. After the transition period is completed, raw bones are perfectly natural and form a vital part of your dog’s species appropriate daily diet. Bones have been essential to the canine’s health and wellbeing for thousands of years.

Warning - NEVER FEED COOKED BONES

Cooked Bones can splinter and cause intestinal damage, obstruction or death.

Our raw feeding packages include everything you will need to know about adding bones safely to your dog’s raw diet:

Health benefits & nutritional information
Valuable tips + all the warnings
Matching the appropriate bone to the size of your dog
How to serve recreational and soft palatable bones safely
Plus our 12 step transitioning program.

As our modern-day dog is still the same animal as the wolf, even after years of breeding and man’s intervention - all that separates them biologically is a difference of 0.2%.

So how can one dispute feeding what is biologically appropriate to the canine species?

You may find this alarming, but students studying to become veterinarians receive very little education on pet nutrition. What they do receive is information largely provided or sponsored by pet food companies and as a result - most vets in turn stock the commercial pet food kibble endorsed by the pet food company that has trained them.

This being noted,  there are more and more vets who are seeing the health benefits of raw feeding and understand the significance of feeding a diet that supports the canine species. Vets are becoming aware of the better alternatives to feeding commercial grade dog food.

So if your local vet isn’t invested or on board to support you on your raw feeding journey, a
holistic vet would be the perfect choice.

Pet obesity is a huge epidemic sweeping the United States.  More than half of all dogs in the US are either overweight or obese and this puts our pet’s health at a huge risk of many ailments such as arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure, tumours and a shortened life expectancy.

This weight epidemic has become a huge problem as giant commercial grade pet food companies have altered and interfered with the carnivores’ natural diet.

Cheap carbohydrate filler can make up 60% of the diet in commercial grade pet food and this is not the way a canine is designed to eat. We really need to tackle this problem by looking at what we are providing our dogs to eat.

Can raw feeding help with weight loss?

Yes, feeding raw maintains a strong lean dog at a consistent healthy weight.

It’s the diet nature intended and provides your dog with the perfect ratio of fats, water, proteins, carbohydrates and nutritional content to thrive.

High protein diets maintain muscle mass while reducing fats and this is the ultimate as lean dogs have a longer life expectancy, stronger immune systems and lower blood pressure.

The truth is - all dogs are prone to worms no matter what diet they are being fed, so must always be wormed regularly.

When feeding raw we endorse meats that are only for human consumption that have passed stringent government inspections and regulations.

Our educational raw feeding packages outlines suitable meat options and freezing solutions that will safeguard meats which may be prone to parasites.

These healthy practices will not only keep your dog safe but also keep you healthy when consuming meats.

NO!

Feeding raw and kibble together should only occur during the transitioning process.

Feeding a combination of both raw and kibble as part of your dog’s daily diet is dangerous and not without consequences.

The high starch content of a kibble diet alters a dog’s stomach digestion so a kibble fed dog functions with an alkaline gut, whereas a carnivore who is eating a species appropriate raw diet (as nature intended) has an acidic gut.

The acidic stomach (gastric Ph) is the natural composition and state in which the canine species are designed to function. An acidic PH of 2 or lower is needed to break down bones, meat and prey animals into soft digestive tissue.

When you combine the two different foods, the balance of stomach PH is dangerously altered.  The gastric digestion slows down and your dog will be unable to effectively destroy any contaminates or bacteria found in food.

Finally, raw bone is not able to soften or break down effectively in this environment which puts your dogs in immediate danger of bone obstruction.

We understand the initial transitioning process may seem daunting at first, but through a comprehensive education and a little patience - a lot can be achieved to change the quality and health of your dog’s life.

Our Certified Raw Pet Food Nutritionist has made it simple by documenting her knowledge and experiences over the past 12 years of raw feeding in our best- selling raw feeding packages.

You will have access to a 12-step transiting program so you can transition your dog safely with ease and confidence.

In the United States, the National Academy of Sciences employ a group of scientists who run the National Research Council (NRC). This committee research the nutritional requirements of many animals including canines.

The research gained on whole food sources determines how much energy, nutrients and minerals should be fed and including ratios and proportions.

With a certification in Raw Pet Food Nutrition, we have done the math for you by balancing each of our meal plans to ensure all of the essential nutritional requirements (as set by the National Research Council) are met for your dog.

With NRC balancing, you can rest assured there will be no nutritional gaps in your dog’s daily requirements of essential vitamins and minerals as these will be provided completely in the balanced diet.

You just need to safely follow our meal plan recipes.

Feeding raw doesn’t always cost as much as you think. Talk to your local butcher or farmer as they may be able to assist you with a variety of alternatives.

Cheaper cuts of meat including off-cuts, bones and organs will go a long way to help you balance out more expensive items needed for raw feeding and will still provide your dog with much needed nutrients.

We only have to look at the epidemic of ailments, cancers and diseases occurring at rapid rates in our pets to determine that any extra costs will be absorbed in the long instead of paying hefty vet bills.

The reward of a happy and healthy dog will far our weigh the few extra dollars you might end up spending on whole and natural foods.
